Repeat Prescribing Service

The practice is responsible for prescribing over £700 000 worth of drugs and treatments each year. Therefore we obviously have a great responsibility to prescribe carefully and safely.

We do not normally issue prescriptions which are used for acute or short term problems (e.g. antibiotics or paracetamol) unless we have assessed the patient. We advise all patients and families to keep a supply of simple treatments for minor illnesses at home - in a safe place. All families with small children should keep a supply of liquid paracetamol.

Some patients are on regular treatment and do not need to see the doctor or nurse each time it is issued. We therefore run a Repeat Prescribing Service for issuing regular prescriptions for those items selected by the doctor.

The doctor will decide which treatments can be repeated and for how long. If the doctor decides that it is appropriate for you to use the Repeat Prescribing Service when the first repeat is issued there will be a Repeat Prescription "tear-off" slip attached to the prescription. This will list all the items that may be requested without seeing the doctor or nurse. If the list of items is incorrect you will need to discuss this with the doctor. Please note that although the contraceptive pill may appear as a repeat prescription this is not issued without the patient being seen.

If you are a new patient and have been receiving regular repeat prescriptions from your previous doctor you will need to make an appointment with the doctor as well as the nurse so that we can arrange the Repeat Prescribing service for you.
